The payroll clerk abused his position and stole £ 55,000 from his own Nottinghamshire employer

A former payroll worker has been jailed after “abusing his position” and stealing tens of thousands of dollars from two Nottinghamshire employers.

Robert Carlin, who would not have a fixed address in the last court appearance, has transferred more than £ 55,000 from Reflex Labels in Mansfield to his own bank accounts.

The 40-year-old fraudulently diverted money to six bank accounts in 34 transactions between July and November 2018.

He stole the last wages owed to employees leaving the company, hoping his crimes would go unnoticed.

After an ex-employee failed to receive his larger settlement payments, Carlin was questioned by police.

However, when he was released pending further investigation, he joined the accounting department of Bistrot Pierre Nottingham, where he again committed the offense.

Further financial investigations were carried out and funds in excess of £ 7,000 were identified and held in Carlin’s accounts.

He pleaded guilty to the offenses in Nottingham Crown Court and claimed to have stolen the money to help pay off illegal gambling debts – although police have found no evidence to do so.

Detective Constable Lucy Ward, of the Nottinghamshire Police Fraud Investigation Team, said: ‘Carlin was a trusted employee, but he abused his position by manipulating the company’s systems. for his own gain and by committing fraud.

“I hope this case sends a clear message to those who believe they can abuse their position for their own financial gain that the offenses will be discovered and you will be brought to court to answer for your crimes.

“Nottinghamshire Police take fraud and financial abuse seriously and are committed to investigating such reports as we recognize the far reaching effects this type of crime has on victims.”

A judge called Carlin “totally dishonest” and sentenced him to 26 months in prison.
