Heating aid for energy bill available to eligible low-income customers – Newton Daily News
DES MOINES – As temperatures drop and home heating costs start to pile up, MidAmerican Energy is encouraging customers facing financial hardship to apply for funding from the Home Energy Assistance Program for Low-Cost People. income, or LIHEAP.
“Winters can add a financial strain for our customers who are struggling to pay their energy bills,” said Mike Gehringer, vice president of customer operations for MidAmerican. “We encourage any client with financial difficulties to contact their local community action agency to find out if they are eligible for assistance.” Customers concerned about their ability to pay their energy bills or who wish to discuss payment terms should call MidAmerican at 888-427-5632.
LIHEAP helps qualified low-income families pay their winter heating bills. Each state receives and administers funds from the US Department of Health and Human Services, so programs vary from state to state.
Community action agencies in Iowa review applications and manage grant funds. Household income and size, type of primary heating fuel, type of dwelling and other factors are taken into account.
To be eligible for LIHEAP in Iowa, an applicant’s total household income must be equal to or less than 200% of the 2021 Federal Poverty Guidelines. For example, a one-person household is eligible with a annual gross income equal to or less than $ 25,760. A family of four is eligible with an annual gross income of $ 53,000 or less. The program started accepting applications on October 1 for those 60 years of age or older, and will accept applications on November 1 for all others. The program accepts applications until April 30, 2022.

Budget billing provides a predictable monthly bill
MidAmerican Energy customers who want to avoid bill fluctuations from month to month can opt for the Budget Billing Program, which allows customers to pay the same amount each month for a set period. Budget billing does not reduce tariffs or costs, but provides a more predictable bill.
How to help low-income clients this winter
To help those in need, customers can donate to MidAmerican Energy’s I CARE program. I CARE provides funds to local community action agencies to help low-income residents pay their heating bills and adapt to inclement weather.
Customer donations fund I CARE, with a 25% match from MidAmerican Energy. Tax-deductible donations to the I CARE program stay in the local community and go directly to help those in need. MidAmerican Energy customers can donate to the I CARE program via a checkbox on their monthly bill or can pledge online.
