Gamecocks women’s basketball reveals 2021-22 season theme

This year’s goal is clear for South Carolina women’s basketball, and the new Gamecocks theme reflects that.

” Net value “.

Head coach Dawn Staley announced the theme to a crowd at Colonial Life Arena ahead of the South Carolina open scrum on Friday night.

“Net worth taps into a universal symbol of basketball success – cutting the net,” Staley said to thunderous applause. “Every member of the team, the program and the fan base plays a role in moving towards this level of success. Each role is not the same, but each person has a net worth, an added value necessary for the team to achieve their goal.

Staley and the Gamecocks had teased this year’s theme on social media ahead of Friday’s reveal, tweeting the initials “NWT.”

“The theme always includes the team, always includes the state of women’s basketball, always includes you,” Staley said before the reveal. “I hope that with this year’s theme, you will really feel how much we love you and how much we care and appreciate that you love women’s basketball.”

Senior playmaker Destanni Henderson said coaches bring the theme of each year to the team based on what “starts the conversation.” She said they will all come together to endorse the most suitable message.

“I feel like it’s a big theme,” Henderson said. “As Dawn explained, cut the net, the fans, everyone who pours into us and what we value as a team and as individuals. (Name, picture and likeness) is a big thing going around this year. It’s just that it impacts not only us, but everyone around us.

The Staley Gamecocks have announced an annual theme for each season since 2012-13. Last year’s theme was “What Matters? The theme for the previous season was “Woman Up!” ”

Friday night was the first time fans and media could take a look at the five newcomers from the Gamecocks, including the country’s No.1 recruiting class and Syracuse transfer Kamilla Cardoso, who was ACC Freshman of the Year and ACC Co-Defender of the Year for the 2020-21 season. The Gamecocks are also firing all members of the Final Four team from last year.

South Carolina will play Benedict in an exhibit at Colonial Life Arena on November 1 at 7 p.m. ET. The Gamecocks will then officially open the season on the road in Raleigh for their opener against NC State on Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. ET.
